“Good! Because I wanna be the boss of somebody!”

Five year old Maggie and I had been upstairs in her bedroom playing together when she wistfully asked me, “Mama, am I ever gonna be a mama?” Of course I got all sentimental, thinking about someday being a grandmother… only to find out that what my darling daughter was really concerned about was being able to boss somebody around someday!

We all like to be in charge, don’t we? We love control.

Recently I asked the question to a Bible study group, “What are you most afraid of?”

The first answer came: Losing control. And everybody agreed.

We women surely like to manage things, don’t we? We want to be in control of what is happening to our husbands, our children, and our own selves.  We do everything we can to avoid uncertainty.  It’s so. . . scary.

So I asked my Bible study friends, “How can we be okay with not being in control of what happens to our loved ones?”

They said, “We don’t know, Jeanne, you tell us!”

I love it when they play right into my hand. (smile)

We began to talk about the sovereignty of God and how He is in complete control of everything. I may have even sung a few lines of “He’s got the little bitty babies in His hands”.

Here’s the truth of God’s Word:

Everything in the heavens and earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as being in control of everything. Riches and honor come from you alone, and you are the ruler of all mankind;  1 Chronicles 29:11-12 TLB

But not only is God large and in charge, He loves us. That’s the coolest part. He’s not just a giant ruler over everything, He is our loving Father. He truly cares for you and He truly cares about me. He wants to take care of us. The things that matter to us matter to Him. He is careful with our lives. Because of His great love.

God is sovereign and He loves me. That’s about the best truth ever. If I could remember that truth every minute of my life, well, that would be amazing. I would surely fret-no-more.

So here’s the cool part. Here’s the part where we get to be the boss. We get to be the boss about how we think. We get to boss our brains! Our thought lives don’t get to rule us, we get to rule them!

We’ve heard for so long that our minds are a battlefield, and I know that is true, but I can also see how my mind can be like a playground. I can choose what I allow to play there. I choose which thoughts to entertain. Do I entertain thoughts of fear? Do I allow myself to dwell on the “what ifs?” Or do I take control and remind myself of the truth of God’s Word? “My Heavenly Father is in complete control of my life and He loves me. Nothing happens to me without first being approved by Him.”

We can choose to dwell on thoughts that freak us out, or thoughts that fill us with confidence in our God. What an amazing power this is, this deciding what to believe. I’m believing truth.

How ’bout you?

Today that daughter of mine does indeed have three children to boss around, and her upstairs bedroom is no longer a place where we play.  It has been converted into an office. Maggie is now a fantastic Mama in charge, and her little ones benefit from her willingness to believe God’s truth.
